Children’s Allergies


We knew early on our son had allergies. He was breast fed until about 15months. After that it was time
to transition to whole milk. As an infant, he had significant eczema. Anytime, he was given a little yogurt or snack with milk in it we noticed he would have red spots on his face and his eczema would flare. We
took him to be tested through a blood test and sure enough there were multiple positive results.
1. Milk
2. Shellfish
3. Tree nuts
4. Eggs
5. Some trees
6. Some grasses
7. Some dogs

As a child, I had allergies myself so this was not a surprise to me. Over the years, we have learned to
adapt. Thankfully, there have been many dairy free alternatives that we have found. Daiya makes many dairy free products that we have found that taste good. We are able to make pizza, chicken salad,
quesadillas, macaroni and cheese, and grilled cheese sandwiches to name a few favorites. Our son is
very aware of what is “safe” to eat and what is not safe. He is very good about defaulting to not eating
something if he is unsure if it is safe. He has been such a good sport about it. For birthday parties and
class parties we have found alternatives that we have available for him just in case. Whole fruit makes
delicious dairy free ice cream and whole foods makes vegan cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. There have
been many places like Menches and Ritas that serve Italian ice or dairy free ice cream so he enjoys
stopping there for a treat!

We are blessed to have found these alternatives and to have a life style that now incorporates dairy free options. He is able to enjoy many of the foods other children get to eat just with a change in a few of
the ingredients. Hopefully, one day he will be able to eat what ever he wants without restriction.
